Tranquebar – Lost Heritage

Tranquebar is a European mispronunciation of the Tamil name ‘Tharangambadi’ which means Land of the Singing Waves….

The architectural journey of Tranquebar can be traced back to the 14th century Masilamaninathar Temple built during the Pandya Regime….had been an active international trading port attracting Muslim traders, German theologians and Moravian entrepreneurs…

Tranquebar was actually part of Chola (10th to 13th century), Pandya (14th century) kingdoms. In 15th century, under the rule of the Thanjavur king, Raghunatha Nayak…

Some of the worth visiting points are 17th century colonial fort, 18th century churches…..21st century crumbling heritage structures recently restored includes The Bungalow on the Beach(which is only 08room heritage hotel currently under Neemrana chain – This was our home for 3days…Trust me if one wants to feel the by gone era – this is the place to stay….but a word of caution… if you are one of those who do not prefer to stay in old colonial buildings & get a feeling of being haunted…this is definitely not your taste !!!!

Dont forget to see the Gate House, Shiva Temple, façade restoration of St. Theresa’s Convent, former Danish governor’s residence and Goldsmith Street houses…..

Fishing being the major industry…if you are a seafood lover… one must try the local seafood delicacies….. the aromas itself are mouth watering…….

Some travel facts :
Nearest airport : Chennai, post which a road journey of about 6hrs by a car…..one can also take a bus for more local flavour( it will take upto 8hrs)

Definitely take a Walking Tour…best way to see this town is to grab a map & set on foot…if you are little adventourous… hire a bicycle !!

Hoping this historic seaside town finds itself through the ongoing transition to overcome the effects of tsunami 2004 & soon becomes an equally popular tourist destinations in India…
